Install squirrelmail on CentOS RHEL Fedora

Overview

A standards-based webmail package written in PHP. It includes built-in pure PHP support for the IMAP and SMTP protocols, and all pages render in pure HTML. It has very few requirements and is very easy to configure and install. SquirrelMail has all the functionality you would want from an email client, including strong MIME support, address books, and folder manipulation.

Install the prerequisites

Download the latest tarball of squirrelmail, untar it and move it to the document root of the web server. Also change the ownership.

Next configure squirrelmail according to your environment.

There are two ways of performing this, the first one is to edit the main squrrielmail conf file using an editor such as vi or nano. First copy the sample file

Go through the file and edit the settings accordingly.

The second one which I personally prefer is to run the configure script

This will provide you a menu based interface to modify the settings according to your environment. Don’t forget to save the configuration at the end.

Also if you are wondering why the captcha that you can see in the screenshot above is missing from your installation, let me tell you the secret its a plugin that needs to be installed and activated. Squirrelmail comes with many plugins completely free to enhance the installation.

To enable captcha plugin you can download the plugin, untar it and copy it to the plugins directory.
